Municipal Solid Waste Management: Overcoming sector challenges towards EU harmonization

May 16-20, 2011
Held at the JVI in Vienna, the workshop was targeted at policy makers, senior officials, practitioners, and other representatives from local and national authorities and public utilities from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia. Participants were offered the opportunity to attend a dissemination conference followed by a series of thematic workshop sessions, to learn from their peers in the region and from more advanced EU Member Countries. The training was designed to be practitioner-oriented and hands-on, focusing on identified issues in the targeted countries and drawing from lessons and practice experience in the EU and world-wide. The focus was on municipal solid waste, such as household waste, waste from commercial entities, and comparable types of waste, but did not include industrial waste, healthcare waste, or other types of hazardous waste.

"The MFSA tool is very useful and can help LGs assess their financial performance and look for additional financing. On the other hand, it is a huge responsibility to translate the budget into strategies that will drive LG's development",
Reisa Duraj, Head of Finance and Treasure Relations Sector of the Shkoder Municipality, Albania

"This capacity building program will enhance knowledge and skills of local governments, particularly of medium and large cities."
